How to Pair your Apple Pencil (USB-C) to your Apple iPad
Unlike the 2nd Gen Model Apple Pencil, the USB-C Pencil does not support magnetic pairing or charging.
Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Connect:
- Plug the Apple Pencil (USB-C) directly into the USB-C port on your iPad.
- The iPad should immediately show a “Pair” or “USB accessory detected” message.
- Tap Pair to complete the connection.
Once paired, unplug the Apple Pencil. It will remain connected wirelessly. However, the Apple Pencil still works while connected and remains in “Low Battery Mode,” whilst in use.
(Recommendation for ease of use: to use the Apple Pencil without the USB-C cable connected. It will give the end user a greater range of motion.)
Troubleshooting:
There have been common compatibility issues on older iPads running iPadOS 16. Always update to the latest version before setting up your Apple Pencil.
- Ensure the iPad is running iPadOS 18.6.2 or later.
- If no prompt appears after plugging in, unplug and reconnect the Pencil.
- Restart the iPad and verify that no other USB-C devices are interfering.
